Prepare your heart for the Sermon by looking through these suggestions that will assist you in making the most of our time together hearing God's Word.

You will find suggestions for thinking more critically through the passage, meditating more intently on the text, and prayerfully seeking wisdom to deepen your understanding of the passage to be preached this Sunday.

Carefully Think

  • Skim 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 to set the context, read 10:14-22 for this week’s preparation. Who was Paul using as an example to illustrate his point? What was Paul referring to when he warned the Corinthians against idolatry? (Read Numbers 32:1-8 for a reminder).
  • In what was Paul’s audience in participation with him? What was he referring to in vs. 16-17?
  • What does Paul say is actually at the root of idol worship and pagan sacrifices? How
does that compare with our participation in the body of Christ?
  • What did Paul state was his main reason for warning this group against idolatry? How did he state the seriousness of this behavior and the consequences that may follow?
  • The Sermon Study equipping class notes are available online for anyone wanting to dig deeper. Please review this week's notes to help study this passage. Click here for the notes.

Prayerfully Meditate

  • When you think of the term "idolatry", what comes to mind (in general)? Is there any idolatry in your own life? Make a list of any idols that come to mind from your own life.
  • Are there any events or aspects of our culture that you would equate with the kind of pagan worship that Paul was addressing? If so, what are your interactions with or reactions to them?
  • What specifically comes to mind when you think about what Paul says regarding the
activity of demons in the world? Do you see any participation with demons in our culture?
  • Thinking about the seriousness of Paul’s warning, have any convictions come to mind about sin in your own life?
