Carefully Think

  • Read the book of Habakkuk in one sitting.
  • Who is this prophecy about? Who is the actual audience of this book?
  • Who do you believe initiated this dialogue?
  • What are the key doctrines that God illustrates in this prophecy?
  • What is Habakkuk’s first complaint? (1:2-4) What is God’s answer? (1:5-11)
  • What is Habakkuk’s second complaint (1:12-2:1) What is God’s reply? (2:2-20)
  • What is the core message of Habakkuk’s text? (2:4)
  • Why does Paul quote Habakkuk 2:4 in Romans 1:17 and Galatians 3:11?
  • Why does the author of Hebrews also use Habakkuk 2:4 in Hebrews 10:38?
  • What are the main elements found in Habakkuk’s prayer to God? (ch. 3)

Prayerfully Meditate

  • Is it proper to question God and his actions as Habakkuk did in the first two chapters?
  • Think about the injustice(s) that appalled Habakkuk?
  • In what ways do God’s answers to Habakkuk’s questions relate to our present-day life?
  • In what ways does God care about the injustices that take place in our modern society?
  • How do we as Christians care about the injustices that take place in our country, in our world?
  • How does the spirit of the first half of Habakkuk differ from the latter half?

Intentionally Act

  • Spend a few moments in prayer and contemplate your attitude towards God when “injustices” befall you and your loved ones.
  • Pray for non-Christians who will be present this Sunday to respond appropriately to God's word.
  • How should this book impact our congregation as a whole? Pray that God will prepare our hearts for his work of grace this Sunday as we gather.
  • Pray for those who will be leading our gathering to edify the body well: Dawson Bryant, music; Brandon Ferguson Congregational Prayer and Scripture Reading; Bret Capranica, teaching.
  • Listen to the songs we will be singing together and meditate on the message of each song. Prepare yourself to sing together with the church on the Lord's Day.
