Carefully Think

  • Read Matthew 10:5-15.
  • List the various instructions Jesus gives to the 12.
  • Who were the 12 to focus their ministry on? Who were they not to focus on?
  • What was the relationship between the activities of the 12 and Jesus’ activity (Matt 9:35-38)?
  • What does Matt 10:10 suggest is reason why the 12 were not to acquire gold, silver or copper, or take a bag to two tunics, etc.?
  • How do these instructions fit with Jesus’ instructions to them in Matt 28:18-20?

Prayerfully Meditate

  • Why did Jesus ask the 12 to focus on the Jews only?
  • Was this to be their focus for the rest of their ministry? Why or why not? How do you know?
  • What details in this passage seem to be instructions that would fit anyone in any era and which seem to be uniquely fixed on the apostles for a fixed duration of time? How do you know?
  • How do you know when to apply Matt 10:11-14?
  • What broad principles about public ministry should we derive from Matt 10:5-15? Make a list of all that you see.

Intentionally Act

  • Write down the two most important ways you could apply this passage to your own ministry to those without Christ?
  • Write down ways this passage could assist you in praying for those who are engaged in full time public ministry (pastors and missionaries). Use this list to pray now for missionaries and church leaders you know.
  • How could this passage assist you right now in praying for those who have not yet heard the gospel or for those who have heard it and are considering it? Pray for them now.
  • Pray for those who attend this Sunday who need to be converted. Pray that their eyes will be opened to their need and they will embrace Christ as Lord.
  • Pray for our members to understand and have a conviction to apply what they hear this Sunday.
  • Pray for those who will be leading the service on Sunday that they will serve in the most edifying way: Dawson Bryant, music; Mark Krystyniak, Elders’ Prayer and Scripture Reading; Bret Capranica, teaching.
  • Listen to the songs we will be singing on Sunday and prepare your heart to sing with the whole church.
